No-one is certain as to whether or not Meghan Markle's father, Thomas, will be walking her down the aisle this Saturday.
The celebrity news website TMZ was told by Mr Markle, at his Mexican home, that he'd chosen not to go to his daughter's royal wedding.
For Ms Markle, this was "a deeply personal moment", Kensington Palace said.
This was following the circulation of photos he had taken by a member of the paparazzi.
The photos showed him getting measurements for a wedding suit and looking at pictures in the news about Meghan.
It has been reported that he said that he didn't wish to cause his daughter shame by going to the wedding.
Mr Markle endured a heart attack around a week ago, according to TMZ, though this has yet to be verified by the palace or family.
"This is a deeply personal moment for Ms Markle in the days before her wedding.", said a Kensington Palace spokesperson.
"She and Prince Harry ask again for understanding and respect to be extended to Mr Markle in this difficult situation."
According to recent reports, Mr Markle had been due to meet Prince Harry for the first time this week, in addition to the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen, before he would take his daughter down the aisle at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.
Nicholas Witchell, the BBC royal correspondent, stated that he recognised how Ms Markle, 36, had been anxious and concerned about the well-being of Mr Markle. According to Meghan, he is quite a shy and reclusive figure.
Witchell added, "I understand it is still very much Meghan Markle's wish that her father should be there on Saturday to support her,"
