"The good mother, the wise mother...is more important to the community than even the ablest man; her career is more worthy of honor and is more useful to the community than the career of any man, no matter how successful."
-- Theodore Roosevelt
It is broadly agreed across many cultures that the mother is a fundamental part of society. The Arabs have a saying that goes: "The mother is a school; if she is well reared, you are sure to build a nation." An Ancient Jewish proverb likewise expresses appreciation towards the mother figure, implicating her role as near godly: "God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers."
Motherhood is perhaps one of the most predominant roles in our society and yet, simultaneously, it is also one of the most underappreciated. I cannot deny that there haven’t been instances where I've not shown my mum gratitude for washing my clothes, doing my dishes, braiding my hair and making my dinner, day in and day out. Like your typical teenager that tends to focus on their own troubles and desires, rather than on the concerns of others, I only expected my mum to be there for me at my every beck and call.
Though as I've grown older, I've come to develop a deep-seated respect for the level of sacrifice the mother's make over the course of their lives. A sacrifice that is made lovingly and without resentment.
When I was younger I almost viewed the way mothers behaved, giving and giving whilst expecting nothing in return, as something quite alien. Human's are inherently selfish creatures, especially when young and dependent.
But with time, a switch, gradually, flipped.
It became so clear that one can gain happiness and fulfilment simply from giving others your time, your energy and your love. Having a mother that does so much for you, tirelessly and affectionately, over the course of your life, most definitely, becomes an incredible source of inspiration.
It provides you with a role model for how you might live your own life, and individual that gives back, lives for others and in turn, inspires all those around them.
