A minimum of 53 people have been killed in a fire that burned down a mall and entertainment building in Kemerovo, a Siberian coal-mining city.

Officials have stated that up to 41 children could be among the victims, and over 10 are reportedly lost.

The fire began on the Winter Cherry complex's upper floor whilst the majority of the victims occupied the cinema.

Social media video's display people leaping from windows to evade the fire on Sunday.

"According to preliminary information, the roof collapsed in two cinemas," Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement to the BBC.

What started the fire has not yet been discovered and authorities have begun an investigation.

Around 660 emergency personnel have been deployed in the rescue mission. For over 17 hours firefighters took on the flames.

The city, Kemerovo, resides 3,600km (2,200 miles) east of Moscow.
