The nautical theme is a timeless classic and you don't have to be beside the seaside to enjoy some of its charm. Create your own nautical themed crafts to bring a touch of maritime magic into your home.

Nautical wreath

Find some thick boat rope and make a wreath shape, onto which you can affix nautical inspired decorations. The use of mini bunting and small block charms crisscrossing in the centre gives this piece a nice mix of intricate detail with simplistic design.

Painted jars

Nothing says nautical like navy and white stripes with an anchor design. These painted jars are not only useful (utensils/pen holders), they are also great fun to make. Use masking tape to create the stripes and a silver marker pen to draw the detailed anchor design. Finish off with some rustic string knotted around the top of the jar to disguise the grooves.

Beach candle

For these you will need a plain white pillar candle, some sand and lots of buttons, although I would prefer to use shells. First, rub liquid craft glue onto the bottom of the candle and dip into sand to create the beach effect. Then get creative with buttons, or shells and fill your beach with a beautiful sea-inspired scene.

Painted wooden boards

Some artistic skill is required to produce this effectively, however it's surprising how good different shades of blue look with minimal effort. The trick is to have about three or four blue tones to work with and then layer each colour until you get the desired effect. The quality of the grain on the wood you use will also determine how authentic the finished piece looks.

Nautical themed magnets

These are literally 'cute as a button' and are the perfect thing for on the fridge to hold all those little drawings and postcards on. These also make the perfect gift, so store a few in little drawstring bags ready to dish out to people on their birthday.

Personalised maritime signal flags

This is a brilliant idea. With each of the maritime flags representing a letter, you are able to spell out peoples names and affix the flags onto a framed picture. It's makes for a really personal, visually very effective piece for the wall.
